工艺 · The Making

Three acts of fire

The workshop wakes before the city does. By 5 a.m. the wheel is already turning — a tianqiu vase must be thrown in a single breath, because porcelain remembers every hesitation in the wrist.

Three layers of iron-and-copper glaze are brushed on, each dried before the next. Where they overlap, flame will find them. Then the kiln: 72 hours of pine wood at 1320°C.

Nobody paints this vase

What makes yao bian unrepeatable is that nobody paints this vase. The glaze is only ink; the flame is the brush. Temperature, airflow, ash fall and the vessel’s exact seat in the kiln conspire to paint patterns no hand could plan — which is why Song-dynasty poets called it “the kiln’s own signature.”

Every centimetre is a decision the maker — or the kiln — made. These are the moments collectors look for first.

Why there will never be another

1320°C窑温 Firing heat
1 / 30出窑完好 Kiln survival
72 h松柴烧成 Wood firing

Of the thirty vessels that entered this firing, twenty-nine cracked, warped or surrendered to the flame in a way the studio could not accept. The glaze chemistry can be written down; the flame cannot. Re-fire the same clay, the same glaze, the same hour of the night, and you will receive a different vase.

“You are not choosing a vase. You are choosing the one the kiln allowed to exist.”
