In Su embroidery, a single silk filament is split into as many as forty-eight strands. The finest are thinner than a human hair — the needle does not pierce the silk so much as persuade it.
This panel took eleven months. The water in it shimmers because the stitch direction follows the current, strand by strand.

Split silk catches light at a different angle than whole thread — the shimmer cannot be photographed, only witnessed. No pattern book exists for this panel; the composition lives in two memories.
